Kagome Higurashi is een modern jong meisje dat met haar gezin bij het oude Higure-heiligdom woont. Zonder dat Kagome het weet, is zij de reïncarnatie van priesteres Kikyo en bezit ze het 'Jewel of Four Souls' (het Shikon-juweel). Op een noodlottige dag lokaliseert Kagome een oude put vlakbij haar huis en wordt abrupt door de put getransporteerd naar een feodaal Japan, bewoond door demonen.
