Kagome Higurashiová je současná mladá dívka, která žije se svou rodinou u staré svatyně Higure. Kagome netuší, že je reinkarnací kněžky Kikyo a vlastní "klenot čtyř duší" (šikon). Jednoho nešťastného dne Kagome najde nedaleko svého domova starobylou studnu a náhle se skrze ni přenese do feudálního Japonska obývaného démony.
