Sherlock Holmes er faldet i unåde i England og har søgt tilflugt på Manhattan. Hans far har besluttet, at sønnen har brug for ædrueligt selskab og konstant overvågning i form af doktor Jane Watson. Hun var engang en succesrig kirurg, men mistede sin licens for tre år siden, da en af hendes patienter døde.
